"Katsumi Watanabe: Shinjuku Gang Story 1965-73" is a street photography collection that captures the "marginalized people" living in Shinjuku from the late 1960s to the early 70s. Behind the rapid economic growth, Shinjuku was a chaotic city teeming with hippies, underground theater actors, people from gay bars, day laborers, drifters, and youth culture. Katsumi Watanabe immersed himself in this environment and, through unposed snapshots, warmly and sometimes humorously captured their lives and expressions. The photographs feature locations such as Shinjuku's back alleys, Golden Gai, Ni-chome, and Kabukicho, etching the diverse and raw breath of the city.
